Novell Netware Remote Printer Configuration Guide

Remote printers are a method of allowing a printer, attached to a workstation, to be available for use by all members of the network. This is useful if the server is far from the machine where people will be working.

First you must establish a single print queue for each printer. This will be done through the PCONSOLE program. Simply select the Print Queue menu and then press INSERT and type the name of a queue. Repeat this procedure for each queue.

You must next create a single print server for each 256 printers you wish to host. To do this move to the final choice on the main menu of PCONSOLE, and select the Print Server menu. Press INSERT and enter the name of the new print server.

There is only one thing to configure for each print queue. After the print server is created enter the print queue list and select the first queue. Then select the option for "Print Server's Serviced" and press INSERT to present a list of servers. Select the appropriate server. Repeat for each queue.

In the Print Server menu you must configure the printers. To do this you must enter the printer configuration menu. You must name each printer, starting at printer 0, and select its location. All printers labeled REMOTE are not on the server, but are located on a workstation. The printers labeled LPT or SERIAL are on the server. When you select a remote port, it must correspond to the port that the printer is connected to on the remote computer. Repeat this for each printer.

Once this is completed, enter the printer service menu and select the queue each printer will service. By assigning a single queue to each printer, you control where the output of the jobs, since capture directs by queue, not printer name.

The final step is enabling the print server, by typing LOAD PSERVER at the console. Then to enable a remote printer simply run the RPRINTER command on each workstation that you wish to have a remote printer attached to. Once you run RPRINTER on the station, it will remain loaded until you disable it, or reboot the machine.

Note: THIS DOCUMENT ASSUMES FAMILIARITY WITH PCONSOLE!!
